Sustainable alternatives for your daily life: 5 easy ways to live more sustainably

It’s true that you can’t change the world overnight. But there are small changes we can all make that will have a big impact on our planet. That’s why trying sustainable alternatives in your daily life is one of the best ways to help protect the environment. It’s about making sustainable choices, from what you eat and drink to which products you buy. In this blog post, we discuss five different sustainable choices to reduce (plastic) pollution by choosing sustainable alternatives for your daily life!
Replace disposable plastic with reusable alternatives.
As the use of single-use plastic has increased, so has plastic pollution. It is even estimated that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in our oceans! This is a major concern for sustainable living, as about 12 million tons of plastic end up in our natural environment every year. To help reduce this, you can choose to replace disposable plastic with reusable alternatives. For example, try reusable storage bags instead of plastic bags, or swap your plastic cotton swabs for a reusable version.
Shop sustainable clothing or buy secondhand.
When buying new clothes, think about how the product was made and where it comes from. Next time, stay away from fast fashion brands that produce their items in third-world countries using tons of chemicals, and invest in quality clothing from a sustainable, local brand. You can also check out your favorite secondhand store—you never know what gems you might find there!
Use natural cleaning products without chemicals.
Don't worry if you currently still use chemical cleaning products to keep your home clean! There are sustainable alternatives that are just as effective and contain no harmful substances for the environment or yourself. With baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice, among others, you can go a long way! Chemicals found in household cleaners can enter our water supply and have toxic effects on the environment, so by choosing to make your own with simple household ingredients, you not only help the environment but also create a healthier environment for yourself and your family!
Repair instead of replace.
Today's society is fixated on consumption—the idea that everything we own should be disposable and easily replaceable so it can be thrown away when inconvenient or no longer needed. This mentality is harmful to sustainable living because it emphasizes buying new items rather than repairing or refurbishing old ones. If you're not very handy yourself, there are many ways to seek help or learn to repair things. It might come as a surprise, but it's actually much cheaper—and more fun—than buying something new!
Choose biodegradable garbage bags.
A plastic garbage bag is not only bad for the environment but also dangerous! They can cause suffocation by blocking animals' airways and take hundreds of years to decompose in landfills. Therefore, use sustainable alternatives like biodegradable garbage bags that break down in our environment and cause no harm. Waste has been one of the biggest contributors to plastic pollution. If you want to make your life more sustainable, try to use as many biodegradable garbage bags as possible.

And remember: It doesn't have to be perfect and it doesn't have to be 100% right the first time. Small steps are great!
