I'm Sanne, and I live with my boyfriend Bram in a terraced house on the outskirts of Utrecht. Our living room isn't large, but it is the heart of our home. We hang out there after work, host friends and family, and watch movies on Sunday evenings with a glass of wine. Yet, for a long time, I felt the space was missing something. Not more furniture, not more expensive items, just a bit more warmth and thoughtful convenience.
Over the past few months, I've made small adjustments. No complete makeover, no new sofa or expensive paintings, but six items that each solved a problem I kept encountering. Some I found by chance, others I deliberately chose after weeks of consideration. All of them earned a place, and together they make the living room feel noticeably different.
My sister Iris, who lives in an apartment above the city, recently visited and immediately said she felt calm when she walked in. She asked if I had hired an interior designer. I hadn’t; I had just made smart interventions in a few spots. In this story, I share what I did, hoping it might help you too. No expensive projects, just thoughtful choices you can make today.
A wireless wall lamp that can hang anywhere
Our house is a rental, which comes with a big downside: I’m not allowed to drill holes wherever I want, especially not for wiring. For years, I looked at the same dull ceiling lamp and a floor lamp in the corner. The rest of the living room was dark as soon as evening fell. Until I came across the 360-degree Wireless Rechargeable Wall Lamp and realized I never had to accept this problem.
What’s so great about this lamp is that it doesn’t need any cord or outlet at all. You charge it via a USB cable, hang it on the wall with a small adhesive plate or a tiny screw, and that’s it. I bought two and hung them both next to our sofa, about eye level. The effect was immediately noticeable. The living room instantly felt warmer and more inviting, as if we had finally found the right atmosphere.
The battery easily lasts a week for us when we use it about two hours each evening. The light itself is soft and warm, not that cool white you find in a hospital room. Bram, who is always critical of interior changes, immediately admitted he now relaxes better in the evening since we’re no longer under that harsh ceiling lamp. For anyone living in a rental or just wanting flexibility with lighting placement, this is a real asset I highly recommend.
A silent wall clock that makes no ticking sound
My previous wall clock came from a hardware store and was fine, except it ticked every second. I didn’t notice it during the day, but when the house was quiet and I wanted to read on the sofa, all I heard was that metallic ticking. It got on my nerves. Iris had a silent clock at her place, and I wondered why I hadn’t arranged that sooner.
The 30 cm Silent Wall Clock has now taken that spot. The mechanism makes no sound, and the clock itself has a beautiful elegant look that fits with the rest of our decor. Bram initially thought it might be battery-related, but no, this is just a well-built silent mechanism that makes no noise even in complete silence.
What I also like is that the numbers glow a little in the dark. Not so bright that it disturbs when you try to sleep on the sofa during a movie, but enough to see the time in the evening without turning on a light. A small detail, but exactly the kind of thing that makes me happy. A living room should radiate calm, and silence is a big part of that.
A grabber tool for those hard-to-reach spots
Admittedly, a grabber tool doesn’t sound like a living room essential. But hear me out. Behind our sofa, under our cabinet, and in corners where the vacuum can’t reach, there’s always something collecting. A coin, a cat toy from the neighbor’s cat who sometimes visits, or a remote control that slipped between the cushions and rolled away. I never wanted to pull the whole sofa apart for such a small thing.
Since I got the 360-degree Mini Grabber at home, that’s a thing of the past. It’s a small handy plastic grabber that lets you reach up to half a meter under or behind things, and it even grabs very small objects. I keep it in the coffee table drawer so I can quickly grab it when something falls again. Iris found it at our place and immediately wanted one too; she always drops her earrings in the most unreachable places at home.
It’s not glamorous, but for peace of mind, this is one of those things that does much more than you’d think. No more crawling on your knees behind the sofa. No more moving furniture to get to something. Just quickly grab and put back. Bram now calls it my secret weapon, and he uses it almost as often as I do.
A powerboard for the living room corner
We don’t have space for a separate workout room and certainly no money for a gym membership I wouldn’t use anyway. But I did want to stay active. The challenge was to find something that could stand in the corner of the living room without getting in the way. The 14-in-1 Powerboard in black turned out to be the answer.
It’s a flat, fairly narrow board where you can do various exercises, mainly push-ups and planks in all kinds of variations. It fits behind the sofa against the wall and is invisible until I need it. Three or four times a week, I grab it for about twenty minutes. It’s no miracle, but it keeps my shoulders and core in shape. Bram has joined in for a few weeks now, and we make a kind of competition out of who can hold a plank the longest.
What I especially like is that it doesn’t permanently demand attention. A regular weight bench would have turned our living room into a mini gym, and I really didn’t want that. With this, I can train, put it away, and the living room stays a living room. For anyone living in a small space who still wants to move, this is a very practical solution without aesthetic damage.
A 3-in-1 charger on the corner of the sofa
Bram and I together have one phone, two smartwatches, and various earbuds that are always dead somewhere. I used to have a tangle of cables on the coffee table, three different chargers, and it was an eyesore. When Iris asked why we didn’t just get a combo charger, I thought: well, why not.
The 3-in-1 Wireless Charger in gray has since become the central spot for all our small devices. It sits in the corner by our sofa, and when I come home, I put my phone on it, my watch on it, and my earbud case on it. No more cables, no more frustrated searching for the right charger. Bram does the same; he drops his stuff on it and continues his evening.
It also just looks nice. Aluminum finish, not plastic, and it fits well with the rest of our interior choices. The MagSafe stand for the phone works flawlessly, and the smartwatch snaps on magnetically. For anyone who relaxes in the living room with a few gadgets within reach, this is truly one of those things that keeps everything neat without looking like technology.
A chess and checkers set for rainy Sundays
Iris and I have been playing chess since we were little. Our parents taught us when we were about eight, and we played against each other until we were teenagers. Then I lost touch with her in that area until she recently said she wanted to pick it up again. I wanted a nice set that’s also easy to take along when she visits or when we go to her place.
The 3-in-1 Chess and Checkers Set turned out to be perfect. It’s a compact set that folds into a flat box, with magnetic pieces so everything stays in place if you accidentally move the board. Three games in one: chess, checkers, and backgammon. We now often take it out on weekends when it rains and we don’t want to go out.
What surprised me is how often we choose it instead of turning on the TV. An hour of chess with a cup of tea is just incredibly cozy. Bram plays with Iris when she’s here, I teach her the openings I used to use, and then we talk about everything and nothing while the board slowly empties. A set can be so much more than a hobby; it can be an excuse to spend quality time.
How these six items complement each other
What struck me while writing this is that none of these things alone is hugely spectacular. A lamp, a clock, a grabber, a workout board, a charger, a game set. But together, they’ve transformed the living room from a space we just happened to stare at in the evening into a space where we genuinely enjoy spending time.
The wall lamps set the right mood for the evening. The clock provides the silence that brings calm. The grabber prevents me from building frustration over those little things that always fall somewhere under or behind. The powerboard keeps me moving without sacrificing my space. The charger brings visual calm to the coffee table. And the chess set gives me beautiful moments with the people I care about.
Bram recently said he sleeps better in our living room than anywhere else. He sometimes just dozes off on the sofa in the evening and is perfectly fine with that. For me, that’s a sign that the space works. Not luxurious, not complicated, just a place where you feel good. That was what I wanted, and these six things together made it possible.
What I’d recommend starting with
If you don’t want to buy everything at once—and honestly, you don’t have to—I’d start with the wall lamps and the clock. Those two together immediately change the atmosphere in your living room. Evening ambiance, daytime calm. From there, you can build further when you encounter a specific problem or just feel like a new project.
The grabber and the charger are practical additions you can add anytime; they don’t take up space and don’t disrupt your interior. The powerboard and the chess set depend more on what you want to do with your time. Want to stay active without eating up your space? Go for the board. Want to do more with the people around you without constantly being behind a screen? Go for the set.
What I especially want to say is that a cozy living room isn’t about money or the right designer items. It’s about thinking about how you actually use your space. What bothers you, what do you miss, what would make the space more pleasant. From those questions, you arrive at choices that truly add something, instead of choices that just look good in a photo.
Since our last spring evening, Iris has been looking at the wall lamp and clock with us. She messaged yesterday that she ordered both. Bram immediately said we should visit her living room again in a month to see the effect. Those kinds of conversations are part of it for me. Let me know if you try any of these things. I always love hearing how something works out for someone else. And if you have tips for me, I’m never done improving our living room either. See you soon, and enjoy your home in 2026.
